Cinnamon Bey Beruwala Steams Ahead With New Initiatives

Tuesday, 08 Jul, 2016 0

Cinnamon Bey Beruwala is one of the largest resorts along the southern coastline of Sri Lanka. The open, lush design of the property pays tribute to the Arabian traders who first made contact with the island in the 10th century. While Turkish inspired interiors are featured along with breathtaking views of the bay and beach.

Cinnamon Bey Beruwala was recently recertified by Green Globe for the second consecutive year and achieved a notable compliance score of 81%.

Christine Chevalaz, General Manager at the resort said, "We are targeting our hotel to become a leader in hospitality and green initiatives."

Environmental initiatives have been the main priority over the past year. A new Green Team has been established which is dedicated to saving energy based on the principles of reduce, reuse and recycling. To decrease energy consumption, there are currently forty solar panels in place for hot water heating providing 50% of the hot water demand at the resort.

Cinnamon Bey Beruwala has an onsite garden that grows fresh herbs for its kitchens and bar. As part of its reuse policy, a new compost pit has been created within the resort grounds. Organic waste, usually destined for landfill, is now used to produce fertilizer for garden plants.

A new green initiative recently introduced at the property is the use of steam for some pest control treatments. This marks another progressive step in the use of eco-friendly alternatives. In the past, the housekeeping and kitchens preferred biodegradable chemicals to reduce the resort’s environmental impact.

As part of its CSR projects, the Green Team planned and organised a cleaning campaign to raise environmental awareness amongst community members about the correct disposal of plastic items. The resort plans to run similar sustainability projects in the future to ensure environmental protection is an ongoing goal shared between staff, guests and local residents.

Demonstrating its commitment to sustainable business, Cinnamon Bey Beruwela became the first hotel in Sri Lanka to be awarded the prestigious LEED GOLD Certification from the US Green Building Council, after fulfilling a comprehensive range of green standard requirements. This includes low consumption of water and energy resources, reduced carbon emissions and less waste.
