New 300-km cycling route linking Italy, Slovenia and Croatia
Launched in late May, the Alpina Mediterranean Cycle Route is a new itinerary providing riders with incredible adventure, culture and food along three countries : Italy, Slovenia and Croatia.
The Alpina Mediterranean Cycle Route, which connects Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia is now open to a world of adventure travelers hungry to discover new cultures and undertake new challenges. The route — which covers approximately 300 kilometers spread over six stages — was created by GoodTrail, a Slovenia-based adventure-travel development firm with more than a decade of cycle route creation experience. The circuit also received fundings of the European Union under the Inter Bike III project.
For travelers serious about adventure on two wheels, a journey along the Alpina Mediterranean is a must-do. Starting in the province of Udine and the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the route winds its way through the Alps in Slovenia before diving to Croatia’s Adriatic coast.
The trail stretches from Pušja Vas in Italy through the Soča Valley, the Goriška region, the Karst and Brkini Hills -all located in Slovenia to finally reach Opatija along the Croatian coast. And continues to nearby Rijeka.
A cycling trail for slow-moving tourism
Designed for touring cyclists of all abilities, the Alpina Mediterranean provides adventurers with authentic experiences, while discovering traditions — culinary, musical, and historical — with slow-travel intention. The Alpina Mediterranean combines quiet asphalt roads, macadam, and forest paths. It is perfect for active travelers who want to engage with new places on two wheels during the day … and enjoy local cuisine, wine, and unique heritage every night.
As part of the initiative, free shuttles with bike trailers will operate four times a day on Sundays between Ajdovščina and Cividale del Friuli. Between the Vipava Valley and Predmeja, services will run on Thursdays and Sundays. In the Brkini Hills, three new e-bike charging stations are available. Visitors can also rent bikes at the Ilirska Bistrica Tourist Information Centre – and soon also in Špeter.
The route provides local travel operators a way to develop tours/ideas around this epic connection between cultures. It encourages travelers with a real, responsible, and sustainable way to embrace one of the world’s best regions to ride a bicycle.
