Delays continue after power cut at world’s busiest airport
Power has been restored to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport after a 10-hour blackout that affected an estimated 30,000 people.
A fire is believed to have caused the power cut at about 1pm local time on Sunday at the airport, which is the world’s busiest, handling over 2,500 flights a day.
The blackout left passengers waiting for hours in the dark in terminals or on board aircraft and hundreds of flights were cancelled.
Major airlines including United, Southwest and American Airlines suspended their operations and Delta cancelled 1,000 flights.
The airport is expected to resume flights at 6am local time today (11am GMT), although many flights have been cancelled or diverted.
Delta has cancelled 300 mostly inbound flights today, with 50 flights diverted to other airports.
The airline said its schedule is expected to return to normal this afternoon.
