easyJet holidays launches 24/7 World Cup hubs for fans

As soccer fans across the UK gear up for a summer of high-stakes matches, new research from easyJet holidays reveals that the traditional vacation is increasingly being replaced by the “fan-cation,” with Brits going to extraordinary lengths to ensure they don’t miss a single minute of World Cup action.

A study of British vacationers highlights a clear divide between relaxation and team loyalty. With tournament matches kicking off as late as 1 a.m. UK time due to the transatlantic time difference, fans are refusing to let a change of scenery get in the way of their passion. Trading the living room couch for a Mediterranean sun lounger, travelers are actively seeking out destinations that embrace the tournament atmosphere.

Passports and Penalty Shootouts

While managing time zones on vacation can be challenging, the research shows British fans are treating match days as the main event. Nearly half (48%) admit they would willingly skip a pre-booked excursion, day trip, or even a romantic dinner if it clashed with a crucial knockout match.

The social compromises don’t stop at dinner. The data shows that more than a quarter (27%) of soccer-loving partners have admitted to causing a “vacation argument” over match schedules.

The vacation friction is most pronounced among younger generations. The research reveals a significant generation gap when it comes to viewing boundaries. A staggering 62% of Gen Z travelers and 61% of Millennials believe watching a game during an intimate vacation celebration is perfectly acceptable, compared with just 30% of Baby Boomers, who prefer complete peace and quiet.

The desire for atmosphere is also influencing booking decisions. Rather than avoiding the hype, more than a third (38%) of supporters say they intentionally book trips to destinations known for a strong soccer atmosphere, simply to experience the local fan culture and celebrations when a goal is scored.

The Ultimate ‘Fan-cation’ Hotlist

For dedicated fans, watching a match on a smartphone by the pool simply isn’t enough. Vacationers are looking for a shared viewing experience, with 70% saying a hotel’s screening facilities and match-day atmosphere are a top priority.

More than half (59%) also admit they would pay a premium of up to £100 per person for a resort that guarantees a dedicated tournament hub.

To meet demand, easyJet holidays has identified a selection of match-ready resorts across Europe and North Africa where fans can enjoy guaranteed sunshine alongside guaranteed screenings.

Our data shows that ‘fan-cations’ are a major trend this summer, with Brits refusing to compromise on either their vacation or their team. By highlighting our top tournament resorts, we’re making it easier than ever to enjoy great value, guaranteed sunshine, and a front-row seat to all the sporting action.
