Ferries face threat of port industrial action
Ferries using Portsmouth could face disruption after port workers voted to take industrial action over ‘heavy- handed’ management.
Workers’ union Unite is discussing with reps what action to take and expects to announce more details later this week, after workers voted in favour of industrial action.
The dispute between workers and managers ranges from security, health and safety to proposals to reduce staff and pay.
Unite convenor at Portsmouth city council Richard White said: "These cuts are ill-conceived and opportunistic and could have an indirect adverse knock-on effect for other council services.
"Our members oppose these proposals not only because of potential changes to pay, but because the reductions to operational staff will have a detrimental impact to the service Portsmouth International Port provides its customers, along with the revenue it generates for other council services."
A spokesman for Brittany Ferries said: "We don’t expect any disruption. It’s too early to say what will happen as it’s just ‘pre-advice’ at the moment. We will wait to hear officially."
