More families are choosing cities for short breaks to combine fun with learning, a hotel chain claims.
The 33-strong Thistle Hotels chain say it has seen a substantial increase in enquiries and bookings of ‘kidcations’ at city centre hotels across the UK.
The trend signals a change in attitudes, with parents looking to treat the family to short breaks that combine fun with learning – showing that city breaks are no longer just the preserve of romantic couples and serious culture vultures, the company claims.
Many families appear to have ‘traded down’ from overseas package holidays, opting for budget domestic breaks, spending less and often staying for shorter periods.
A new family package has been designed to capitalise on the growing interest from parents with young children.
The Thistle deal is £80 per room, including bed and breakfast.
As part of the family package, the chain is also offering 50% off an additional room, and under 12’s eat from the main menu for half price.
Children receive a goody bag including novelty treats like a magic expandable flannel and folding toothbrush, as well as pencils, activity sheet and notepad.
Families staying will also be given free use of heated indoor swimming pools many of which offer a dedicated splash time for children.
Thistle has recently launched an organic children’s menu offering local produce including cottage pie, mild chilli and rice and lasagne.
