FlixTrain doubles down on Germany with new high-speed fleet expansion

Sunday, 15 Feb, 2026 0

FlixTrain, so far the only private competitor to German national rail company Deutsche Bahn on long-distance routes, is betting big on Germany. It recently announced plans to deploy all 65 new high-speed trains ordered from Spanish manufacturer Talgo exclusively on the German domestic market.

The move aims to strengthen Germany’s rail sector while unlocking long-term sustainable growth opportunities on its home turf. The first of the new trains is scheduled to enter service in 2028.

The company intends to use the new high-speed trains to leverage the enormous market potential in Germany and Europe. The high-speed rail market in Germany is expected to grow by 45% by 2030, compared to 2021 volume.

In the meantime, FlixTrain will significantly expand its current German operations. Over the next two years, the company plans to double its existing offering by introducing additional fully modernized railcars. This interim fleet expansion is expected to enhance the passenger experience while increasing service frequency and timetable density.

The strong demand for our services shows that FlixTrain is filling an important gap in Germany’s rail market,” said Flix CEO André Schwämmlein. “The transport minister’s new rail strategy demonstrates that policymakers are setting the right course, and we intend to build on that. Today we operate 15 trains connecting major German cities, and FlixTrain will establish itself alongside the state operator as a second major long-distance rail network with comparable travel times and frequencies.

With the arrival of the new trains, FlixTrain plans to build a high-frequency network linking Germany’s key metropolitan areas. Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder welcomed the investment, noting that the government’s rail strategy is designed to create better conditions for competition and more attractive travel options. “I welcome every step that strengthens competition on rail and recognizes the potential of Germany’s rail sector,” he said.

Fleet to Double by 2028

Even before the launch of the new high-speed trains, FlixTrain will pursue rapid growth in its home market. Starting in 2026, the operator will gradually introduce newly refurbished trains offering more legroom, air conditioning, and upgraded onboard amenities aimed at improving passenger comfort. By 2028, these additions will double the size of the fleet. Currently, more than 1,000 destinations are bookable through FlixTrain thanks to partnerships with regional transport companies, and the network continues to expand.

Next-Generation High-Speed Trains

The new-generation FlixTrains will be capable of speeds up to 230 km/h and feature step-free boarding, modern passenger information systems, high-speed WiFi, and enhanced comfort features. “We will always be more affordable than the competition, and with these brand-new trains we aim to deliver the most attractive rail offering in Germany,” Schwämmlein promised.
