From cat beards to (whisper this) periods

  • YouTube launched its first ever #ComedyWeek at the weekend to raise awareness of the part that social media has played in changing the comedy industry. The week of exciting new programming has included comedy gems such as ‘Downton Diddy’ with the man himself, P Diddy, as well as the side-splitting ‘Learn Guitar with David Brent’. We heart #Youtube
  •
  • It was a big week for online corporation Yahoo! On the same day that it announced a complete overhaul of photo sharing site Flickr, in a bid to rival the likes of Instagram, it also completed a $1.1 billion swoop for micro-blogging platform Tumblr. Upon acquiring the image-based platform, which brings us many of the blogs that we share with glee and go viral, Yahoo!’s CEO, Marissa Mayer, pledged that they would try "not to screw it up".
  •
  • This week’s viral gem from Tumblr was cat ‘beards’. Enjoy.
  •
  • You know social media’s ‘jumped the shark’ when the bureaucrats get onboard. A survey of local authorities published today by accountancy organisation BDO revealed that 98% of councils are using some form of social media, reflecting the fact that three out of four UK consumers now have an active Facebook account. Following in the footsteps of private sector businesses, councils are increasingly seeing social media as a customer service tool with more than two-thirds now using social media to deal with customer queries as opposed to issuing press releases.
  •
  • This week, Skype and Specsavers have teamed up to launch a first of its kind collaboration. Specsavers annual "Spectacle Wearer of the Year" competition to promote its brand among glasses-wearers aims to harness the power of Skype’s video capabilities to bring its message to life. Skype’s unique ability to make more meaningful connections over video will ensure a low barrier to the amount of competition entries, with more than half of its users utilising webcams. The campaign runs until the end of June so don those specs and get Skyping for a chance to win big.

  • And finally, the now infamous ‘Bodyform: The Truth’ viral has cleaned up various industry awards over the past week. For anyone who didn’t see this the first time round – take a peak here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bpy75q2DDow
