Ghana recorded a moderate increase in international tourist arrivals in 2025

Ghana welcomed slightly more than 1.3 million international visitors in 2025, with tourism contributing an estimated $4.34 billion to the national economy, according to the latest figures released by the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA).

The country recorded 1,306,962 international arrivals during the year, a 1.4% increase compared with the 1,288,804 visitors registered in 2024.

Despite the modest growth in arrivals, tourism revenue however declined from $4.82 billion in 2024 to $4.34 billion in 2025, largely due to lower average visitor spending. Average expenditure per traveler fell to $3,319.90 from $3,742.98 the previous year.

The GTA said the figures demonstrate the sector’s resilience and steady recovery, with tourism continuing to play an important role in generating foreign exchange and supporting economic activity.

Business travel leads inbound demand

Business travel remained the primary reason for visiting Ghana, accounting for 31% of international arrivals. Visiting friends and relatives represented 23% of arrivals, while leisure and holiday travel made up 20%.

The United States retained its position as Ghana’s largest inbound market, generating 155,289 visitors. Nigeria ranked second with 136,552 arrivals, followed by the United Kingdom with 56,588 visitors.

The report also highlighted strong visitor loyalty. More than 60% of international travelers were repeat visitors, while first-time guests represented 38% of arrivals.

Visitors stayed an average of 13 nights, with hotels remaining the preferred accommodation option for half of all international tourists. Private residences accounted for 28% of stays, while Airbnb properties captured a 12% share.

High satisfaction ratings

International visitors gave particularly high marks to the country’s hospitality and airport services. Ghanaian friendliness received a 99% satisfaction score, while airport facilities and airport procedures each earned ratings of 98%.

Domestic tourism also continued to expand. Visits to 55 tourism attractions increased by 7%, climbing from 1.68 million in 2024 to 1.79 million in 2025. Residents generated 84% of domestic tourism demand, underscoring the growing importance of local travel.

The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park remained Ghana’s most visited attraction, welcoming 302,523 guests during the year. Kakum National Park ranked second with 203,222 visits, followed by Bunso Arboretum with 149,319 visitors.
