Hotels.com launches ‘Wai Thailand’ campaign
Accommodation booking website Hotels.com is looking to give Thailand tourism a boost with a new campaign entitled ‘Wai Thailand.’
Named after the traditional Thai welcome gesture, the marketing campaign is calling on all Thais to post photos of themselves giving the wai welcome gesture via a special Facebook app.
The "Wai Thailand" Facebook campaign has been launched in the US, Thailand, Australia, Singapore and India and remains open until February 28.
The wai gesture – the pressing of palms together in a prayer-like fashion – is the traditional way Thais greet people, express gratitude and demonstrate respect," said Abhiram Chowdhry, Hotels.com vice president, Asia Pacific.
"Encouraging people everywhere, from all walks of life, to share their own wai photos is a fantastic way to showcase Thailand’s unique character and welcome travellers back to the country."
Siripakorn Cheawsamoot of the Tourism Authority of Thailand says the campaign resonates with TAT’s own ‘Thainess’ marketing campaign which aims to showcase Thai culture and hospitality in a more personal way.
"The campaign will show that this hasn’t changed and encourages travellers the world over to visit and enjoy their own personal wai experience," he said.
