Huge Indonesia eruption causes flight cancellations

The Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki volcano in Indonesia spewed a massive cloud of ash, which could impact flight paths across Asia Pacific.
It erupted overnight, spewing a towering column of hot ash more than 10,000 metres into the air.
Authorities have now put the area on the highest alert with an exclusion zone expanded to 8km from the crater.
Mount Lewotobi is located in the east of Flores Island in central Indonesia.
It is close to the tourist port town of Larantuka.
It could potentially impact flight paths between Australia and Indonesia, as well as flights between East Asia and Perth, WA.
Air New Zealand announced this morning it has cancelled flights to Bali due to the risk.
Indonesia’s Geology Agency said it followed significant seismic activity in the past day.
Evacuations have taken place but there are no reported casualties yet.

It is one of 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia’s ‘Ring of Fire.
