IHG warns of second payment card data breach
InterContinental Hotels Group has issued a warning to customers over a second payment card data breach, which happened in late 2016.
The latest breach occurred for transactions made between September 29, 2016 and December 29, 2016 and the company says there is no evidence any cards were compromised after this date.
This breach affects more properties than the first payment card data breach IHG confirmed in February, which affected card payments at 12 hotels in the US and Caribbean.
In the latest case, there are reportedly 1,100 hotels that have been affected.
It is unclear if the latest hack is linked but is likely to have been detected following ongoing investigations into the earlier data breach.
Previously, the breach affected cards used at bars and restaurants. This time some transactions made at hotel front desks were affected.
There is a look-up tool on the IHG site which lists the hotels affected by searching each city.
IHG says investigations are still continuing.
In a statement IHG said: "IHG hired a leading cyber security firm on behalf of franchisees to coordinate an examination of the payment card processing systems of franchise hotel locations in the Americas region.
"The investigation identified signs of the operation of malware designed to access payment card data from cards used onsite at the front desk at certain IHG-branded franchise hotel locations.
"It is always advisable to remain vigilant to the possibility of fraud by reviewing your payment card statements for any unauthorised activity. IHG values the relationship it has with its guests and understands the importance of protecting payment card data."
