India mandates fare cap amid IndiGo flight meltdown
As IndiGo struggles to get its schedules back on track, India warns airlines not to price gouge.
The Aviation Ministry instigated a fare cap on domestic airfares at no more than INR18,000.
“The Ministry will continue to closely monitor fare levels through real-time data and active coordination with airlines,” it said.
The ministry gave IndiGo two more days to normalise its schedules.
It has cancelled thousands of flights over the past few days.
This is mostly caused by new extended pilot rest period rules, forcing the airline to cancel hundreds of flights a day.
“Given the size, scale and complexity of our operation, it will take some time to return to a full, normal situation, which we anticipate by 15 December,” airline CEO Pieter Elbers said.
The airline admitted it dropped the ball on effective pilot scheduling ahead of the new pilot rest period rules.
The government said it will take action against any airline not adhering to the airfare price cap.
