India’s erotic temples now more accessible
NEW DELHI – Khajuraho, one of India’s best known tourist spots, will finally get a rail link from February.
Railway officials said work on the 64-km track length between Mahoba and Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh was progressing well.
Once the track is laid between Mahoba and Khajuraho, it will be possible for tourists to take trains from Agra or Jhansi directly to avoid a five-hour drive by road from Jhansi.
Khajuraho, a UNESCO recognised heritage site in Madhya Pradesh, is popular for its erotic statues.
The Rajput Chandelas built the sprawling temple complex near Khajuraho village 1000 years ago.
Today, of the original 85 built over a 100-year period, just 22 survive.
