IndiGo claims rival carrier spreading false rumours of cancellations
Budget passenger carrier IndiGo has claimed ‘misinformation’ is being perpetuated by a rival carrier over media reports of cancelled flights due to an aircraft engine supply hitch.
"In the last few days, there have been misinformed media reports suggesting that IndiGo is cancelling eighty-five daily flights," the airline said in a statement.
"We believe that this misleading information about the alleged spurt in cancellations has been spread by one of our competitors within a few hours of the release by the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) of the latest On Time Performance data for the month of July."
Reports said more than 80 flights were cancelled on Friday and at least 12 Airbus aircraft were grounded.
The Pratt and Whitney engines meant for the jets have been held up at customs due to confusion over GST payments.
The country recently rolled out a nationwide GST tax regime which has already caused misunderstandings over implementation in several industry sectors.
The airline said that only eight of its A-320neo aircraft have been grounded, but this is since April 2017.
"These are already factored in our revised schedule which was finalised in June and there are no additional flight cancellations on account of these neos," the statement said.
"This is to clarify that our eight (Airbus A320) neos are grounded. Our schedule was planned in the month of June itself pertaining to non-availability of these aircraft for the month of July, August and September," an airline statement said.
Both IndiGo and GoAir have experienced issues with the engine’s performance, and Pratt and Whitney promised all glitches will be resolved by September.
