IndiGo hikes excess baggage fees
It is going to get more expensive for customers overloaded with luggage when flying with IndiGo.
India’s largest carrier by market share is hiking excess baggage fees by a third.
Anything above the government mandated 15kg free allowance will now cost 33% more.
Fliers now pay INR400 per kg for every kg of excess baggage while customers pre-booking will pay INR1,900 per 5kg excess up to INR11,400 for 30kg.
That is effectively a quadrupling in cost since last August when all Indian domestic carriers were permitted to only charge INR500 per 5kg above the free checked baggage allowance.
Airlines successfully challenged that rule in court last summer and were then allowed to set their own rates.
All airlines offer a 15kg free allowance except flag carrier Air India which still gives 25kg per customer on domestic routes, although it charges more per kg for excess weight beyond that.
IndiGo also reinstated a fuel surcharge last month for domestic flights ranging from INR200-400 per ticket depending on the flight length.
