Indonesia takes action against vacation rentals
Indonesia is cracking down on the short term rental industry.
The Indonesian government has given a deadline of March 31 for all STRs listed on online platforms like Airbnb to apply for the relevant business licences, Indonesian Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana said.
It covers all operators, from one unit owners to large vacation rental property management businesses which are listed online.
The tourism minister said registering for a permit makes the sector fair for all accommodation operators and all will then be paying their fair share of tax.
Bali had considered halting all short-term rentals due to the lack of regulatory and tax oversight. In some areas, unlicensed STRs have been partially responsible for saturating the market
Separately, the Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Digital said it will block or sanction online travel agencies and travel apps that are not registered to market their services in Indonesia.
