Japan natural disasters stymie Universal’s theme park revenue growth
Natural disasters in Japan weighed heavily on theme park operator Universal’s bottom line.
This summer’s extreme weather caused a slight dip in revenue for the theme park division as parent Comcast Corp released Q3 results.
Theme park revenue, including parks in the US, Singapore and the Osaka park in Japan, dipped by 1.4%, but remains 5% up for the year to date.
The city of Osaka was heavily impacted by a devastating typhoon, which caused widespread flooding and closed down the airport for days.
Japan was also hit with an extreme heatwave and an earthquake which rocked the Hokkaido region.
According to Comcast CEO Brian Roberts, severe weather impacted two-thirds of days during the quarter.
However there are ‘signs of recovery in Osaka’ Roberts said during an earnings call.
Overall, Comcast Corp revenue was up 5% to more than $22 billion for the quarter.
