Jetstar ground staff halt further strike action over Christmas

Tuesday, 23 Dec, 2019 0

Jetstar has been given a reprieve over the busy festive season with the Transport Workers Union deciding to halt strikes between Christmas and the New Year.

It follows a pledge by pilots not to strike again until after the New Year

The TWU’s ground staff members and the Australian Federation of Air Pilots have separate contract disputes with Jetstar.

TWU national secretary Michael Kaine confirmed the ceasefire but more stoppages are highly likely in early 2020.

"Workers around the country have told me to convey that they will take no further strike action until after the New Year. For their part, they are sorry about the disruptions … it’s a show of good faith," Kaine said.

The Australian Federation of Air Pilots has promised not to down tools again until at least January 3, 2020.

Industrial action will likely continue then, with Jetstar showing little appetite to compromise.

Jetstar parent Qantas has set a maxumum 3% annual salary increase across the group.

"The holiday period extends well beyond the Christmas/New Year period and their continued threat of action provides ongoing uncertainty for our customers," a Jetstar spokeswoman said.

"As we have repeatedly said to the TWU, we are willing to meet if the union provides clear evidence they are prepared to discuss a deal that fits within the 3% wages approach across the group."
