Legacy systems ‘stifle’ competitive edge
A new report claims travel companies are spending up to 80% of their IT budgets on maintaining legacy systems that are holding them back in the marketplace.
The report, entitled “Legacy Systems – Stifling Business Innovation and Change?”, was predictably produced by a software provider, Traventec, but many of its conclusions were matched at the recent TTI Spring Conference on dynamic packaging.
Traventec claims that companies which delay the introduction of new distribution technology are letting new players, which have built a distribution system from scratch, increase their market strength.
This view was shared by Holidayandmore.com’s Vic Darvey who at the TTI conference described how the business he started before it was bought by Lastminute.com, OTC, benefitted from a “standing start”, rather than being held back by legacy systems.
Traventec chief executive Greg Cawley said: “A new breed of online travel provider is benefitting by building their distribution technology from scratch, allowing them to adapt to consumer’s requirements more effectively.”
