Lord Marshall quits as VisitBritain chairman

Monday, 26 Jan, 2006 0

Lord Marshall of Knightsbridge is to step down as chairman of VisitBritain at the end June, blaming pressures of work.

He said his commitment to other bodies meant he could no longer dedicate the time to the tourism body. Marshall was formerly boss of British Airways.

In a statement, Lord Marshall said: “The industry deserves the best we can provide for it and I have now reached the point where the competing commitments on my time makes it sensible for me to pass the VisitBritain baton to another chairman.

“Tourism is a vital and growing aspect of Britain’s economy and I am very glad to have worked with VisitBritain in this recent period. We have strengthened our international presence and effectiveness and built on the importance of the visitor economy.”

Lord Marshall was appointed chairman-designate in September 2004 before taking over the helm in January 2005.

He is also chairman of Nomura International, Pirelli UK and chairman of the board of governors of Birbeck College – University of London.

The post, which is a non-executive position, will be advertised by the department of culture, media and sport “in the near future.”
