Marriott to construct world’s tallest modular hotel
Marriott is bringing the world’s tallest modular hotel to New York City.
The new 26-storey AC by Marriott will open in Manhattan’s NoMad neighbourhood.
The 360-feet-tall tower will feature 168 rooms and the initial modular construction phase will take just 90 days.
Eric Jacobs, Marriott’s chief development officer, North America, for select and extended stay brands, said: "In North America, the construction process hasn’t changed significantly in 150 years and it’s ripe for innovation.
"The world’s tallest modular hotel will act as a game-changing symbol."
The prefabricated guestrooms will be ready inside and out before installation.
The company says it has been researching the benefits of modular construction since 2014 to speed up a lengthy development pipeline.
Since then it has opened 31 hotels using some form of modular construction, however all of these so far have been low-rise hotels.
Architect Danny Foster, whose company designed the project said: "This is the moment where modular construction takes center stage.
"We wanted to demonstrate that modular building can do more than just harness the efficiencies of the factory. It can produce a graceful and iconic tower."
Work will begin on stacking up the hotel this autumn and it is expected to open in late 2020.
