More cruise ships avoid San Juan
As protests in Puerto Rico rage on, two further ships are skipping calls in San Juan.
Freedom of the Seas and Carnival Fascination completed turnarounds Sunday in San Juan but scheduled stops by MSC Seaside and Celebrity Equinox on Monday have been shelved.
The two lines are taking no chances as a national strike has been called for Monday.
Due to the strike, most tour providers had canceled shore excursions, and protests are planned in Old San Juan.
Puerto Rico Tourism Co. executive director Carla Campos estimates the canceled calls will cost the local economy about $750,000.
"Both the cruise lines and the Tourism Company seek to maintain as many stops as possible while at the same time ensuring the safety and experience of the visitors in the destination," Campos said.
Other alternatives had been mooted but were not viable.
It included use of the Pan American Pier but its depth is just a little too shallow for the ships.
Another dock at Ponce was not feasible either as there is no free berths for the next several days.
So far, canceled calls have led to 15,000 fewer cruisers potentially coming ashore and spending money.
Protests against Gov. Ricardo Rosselló have been gaining steam in recent days since the content of sexist private chat messages were leaked between him and other officials.
Calls for his resignation have been growing daily.
