Nepal curfews are lifted

Curfews in Nepal have now been lifted but visitors are still being advised to take advice from their tour operator.

In its updated travel advice, the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office said delays at border crossings have caused a fuel shortage and may affect travel.

"Consult your tour operator before you travel," it advised.

Curfews were imposed following protests and strikes, many turning violent, over Nepal’s new constitution.

The FCO said although all curfews have now been lifted, visitors should listen to announcements from local authorities and take advice from their tour company.

"Protests can occur at short notice and turn violent," it said.

"Clashes between protesters and police may occur anywhere, including at border crossings. Stay away from protest areas."

Nepal is hoping tourists will return to the destination, generating much needed income following the devastating earthquake in April which killed thousands of people.

In 2014 the country received 800,000 tourists, but tourism is expected to plunge by 40% this year.
