New-generation night trains now linking Vienna to Switzerland

New-generation Nightjet trains are now heading to Switzerland. OnJune 14, Europe’s most modern overnight train celebrated its inaugural journey on the Vienna–Zurich route. To mark the launch, the new Nightjet was given a ceremonial send-off at Vienna Central Station. With this addition, Austrian ÖBB’s next-generation Nightjets are now operating on a total of nine routes.

Vienna is the heart of European night train traffic. No other EU capital offers a comparable range of international night train connections. With the new generation of Nightjets, we are further strengthening this pioneering role: more comfort, more privacy, and a completely new travel experience on rails. The fact that the Vienna–Zurich connection is now being served by these state-of-the-art trains underscores the importance of strong rail links between Austria and Switzerland,” said Peter Hanke, Federal Minister for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure.

With the new-generation Nightjet, we are taking comfort and travel quality in overnight rail transport to a new level. More privacy and modern equipment make the connection to Zurich an attractive alternative to air travel. By the end of the year, we will have 24 new Nightjets in our long-distance fleet, responding to growing demand for comfortable and sustainable travel options,” added Sabine Stock, Member of the Management Board of ÖBB-Personenverkehr AG.

Tickets now available for the next overnight rail journeys

Through its “Sparschiene” fare system, ÖBB is offering highly competitive pricing for Nightjet travelers. The lowest fares are available to those who book early. Whether traveling solo, as a couple, with family, or in a group, the Nightjet offers options for every type of passenger.

For the Vienna–Zurich route, Sparschiene tickets in a standard seat car start from €34.90 (approx. $37 USD) per person and per direction. For families or group travelers, Sparschiene tickets in a couchette compartment (four-person cabin) are available from €54.90 (approx. $59 USD). The new mini cabins for solo travelers are also offered under the Sparschiene fare starting from €54.90 (approx. $59 USD). For higher comfort, more space, and added privacy, sleeper cabin places can be booked from €89.90 (approx. $97 USD) under the same fare system.

Tickets for the next-generation Nightjet can be booked online at nightjet.com, via the ÖBB ticket shop at tickets.oebb.at, through the ÖBB mobile app, at ticket counters and travel agencies in railway stations, via ÖBB customer service, as well as through external sales partners.

Next-generation Nightjet: more comfort, privacy, and space

The seven-car next-generation Nightjet trains consist of two seating cars (including a driving trailer and a multifunction car), three couchette cars, and two sleeper cars. Each trainset has a maximum capacity of 254 seats and berths.

The multifunction car introduces significantly improved transport flexibility, offering six bicycle spaces for cycling enthusiasts, as well as additional room for luggage, strollers, and sports equipment.

Passengers also benefit from a range of technical upgrades. These include free onboard Wi-Fi via the ÖBB Railnet night portal, a modern passenger information system in all cars, and real-time travel updates throughout the journey. In addition to conventional power sockets, passengers have access to USB charging ports as well as inductive charging stations for compatible devices.

New mobile signal-permeable windows improve network reception, ensuring more stable mobile connectivity during travel. Each compartment is equipped with a control display offering features such as lighting adjustment and a service call function to onboard staff. The compartments also feature electronic access control using NFC cards, while all cars are fitted with video surveillance systems to further enhance passenger security and peace of mind
