NOMADIC REGISTERED ON HISTORIC SHIPS’ CORE COLLECTION
SS NOMADIC, the tender to RMS Titanic and last remaining White Star Line vessel, has achieved Core Collection status on the National Register of Historic Vessels (NRHV).
Nomadic now joins a niche group of just 61 Core Collection vessels which also includes the world famous Cutty Sark, Mary Rose and Royal Yacht Britannia.
While the government endorsed NRHV is a database of more than 1,200 historic vessels that survive in the UK, those in its Core Collection are defined as being of pre-eminent national importance.
This news is another significant step forward in Nomadic’s restoration project, as Nomadic Charitable Trust Chairman Denis Rooney explains.
“We’re delighted that Nomadic has been accepted onto the Core Collection and view this as a great coup for the vessel,†said Denis.
“The NRHV is regarded as the authority on historic vessels, and ships on its Core Collection are a higher priority for long term preservation and merit a greater degree of support. We believe that her new elevated status will significantly benefit the project, particularly by supporting a number of major funding applications.
“I’d like to express my thanks to our Trust member, Councillor Sean Neeson MLA, for his substantial involvement in this process.â€
Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie also welcomes the news.
“I’d like to congratulate the Trust for achieving this privileged listing which places Nomadic in its deserved position alongside some of the world’s greatest historic vessels,†said Minister Ritchie.
“As well as assisting funding applications, Core Collection status will undoubtedly benefit Nomadic from a tourism perspective. Being recognised as having extraordinary maritime importance will cement Nomadic as a must-see visitor attraction,†the Minister added.
SS Nomadic is now the third vessel in Northern Ireland to be listed on the Core Collection. Already registered are HMS Caroline and Result.
