NOMADIC REOPENS ITS GANGWAY FOR GUIDED TOURS

TOURISTS once again have the opportunity to visit SS Nomadic, thanks to a joint initiative between Nomadic Charitable Trust and Titanic Tours Belfast which will see Nomadic reopen her gangway to welcome guided tours on board.

This special access arrangement has been agreed to help meet the demand from visiting tourists and facilitate tours in the interim before Nomadic can reopen to the public on a more regular basis.

For a small surcharge, which will be donated to Nomadic’s restoration fund, guests of Titanic Tours Belfast will be given the opportunity to board Nomadic as part of their overall Titanic themed tour. The new access arrangement will not impact on the progress of the restoration but will help maintain interest the project, as Chairman of Nomadic Charitable Trust, Denis Rooney, explains.

“The Trust is delighted to once again offer public access to Nomadic,” said Mr Rooney. “Even though it’s on a limited basis, it gives tourists, especially those who may not be back in Belfast for some time, the opportunity to witness this important part of the Titanic story first hand. From a tourism perspective, it will also help retain interest in Nomadic until she can reopen permanently,” he added.

“Tours will be conducted in very small numbers to ensure that work onboard is in no way disrupted and will be guided by Susie Millar, the great granddaughter of a Titanic crew member. Even though Nomadic doesn’t currently have artefacts or exhibitions onboard, we understand that simply being able to step aboard augments the whole Titanic visitor experience, so we’re very pleased to facilitate this,” concluded Mr Rooney.

Susie Millar of Titanic Tours Belfast added.

“I’m extremely pleased to be given this exclusive access to Nomadic during its restoration. Nomadic is at the heart of the Titanic story and a must-see for anyone interested in Belfast’s shipbuilding history.”

A guided tour with Titanic Tours Belfast costs £25 per person with a £5 surcharge to board Nomadic. Tours are conducted in a luxury Mercedes people carrier and also visit the former homes of Harland and Wolff chairman Lord Pirrie and chief Titanic designer Thomas Andrews before touring the slipways, dry dock and Pumphouse in Titanic Quarter and the Titanic Memorial at the City Hall.
