Olympic climbdown for hoteliers and airlines

Hoteliers in Athens and airlines flying to Greece have been forced to slash their prices to the Olympic Games because of lack of demand.

Last-minute trips to the Olympics, which continues until August 29, are available at a fraction of the prices quoted in Spring, when companies were confident of a scramble for tickets for the event.

City-centre Athens hotel rooms are available for £99 per night and rooms on the outskirts are £50 per night. Several months ago accommodation in the city would have cost up to £400 per night.

Meanwhile return flights to Athens are available with British Airways and Excel Airways for around £160 return. In April, the cheapest flights during the Games were £309 return.

A spokesman for Sportsworld, the official UK ticket agency for the Games, said negative press reports about building problems in Greece and concerns over security had affected ticket sales.

There are still thought to be thousands of tickets left for the Games, with prices from as little as 10 Euros to watch the climax of the marathon, featuring Paula Radcliffe, on August 22.
