Paying year-round commissions
Unlike some lodging places, Joe Finnigan’s two B&B’s in St. Augustine, Fla., pay agent commissions year-round.
“I’d say that’s more uncommon than common, particularly for B&B’s,” said Mr Finnigan of the policy at the St. Francis Inn and Casa de Solana.
That’s because many bed and breakfasts often have much stronger occupancy rates on weekends than on weekdays, he said, making owners at times reluctant to pay daily commissions.
Rates for both inns range from $139 to $218.
Mr Finnigan acknowledges that St. Augustine, often known as the oldest city in the US, has a lot of lodging competition. There are 27 B&B’s, for example.
“Several factors led to that. One is the availability of historical properties in the downtown area,” he said. “Also, up until recently when the Casa Monica opened, there were no real upscale hotels.”
