Police: Man planned mass shooting at Colorado amusement park
A heavily armed man was found dead inside an amusement park, with authorities suspecting he may have been planning ‘an attack of devastating proportions.’
His body was found in a women’s bathroom early in the morning before the park had opened.
It is thought he entered overnight preparing for a possible mass shooting.
He was found at the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The 20-year-old was in possession of a semi-automatic rifle and semi-automatic handgun with a large amount of ammunition.
He was wearing body armor and had several ‘improvised explosive devices,’ the sheriff’s office said.
He was identified as Diego Barajas Medina of Carbondale, Colorado.
“We are, to say the least, extremely lucky that he did not fulfill whatever plan he may have intentioned,” Garfield County Sheriff Lou Vallario said.
“It could have caused a devastating impact on this community.”
“He could have done a tremendous amount of damage.”
Investigators have been interviewing his family to try to piece together a possible motive for an attack and why he took his own life.
