Proposed airport upgrade for Brisbane as business booms
Reports today suggest that Brisbane is to build a new terminal to cater for low cost airlines.
Assuming the Federal Government approves the Brisbane Airport Corporation’s long-term, multibillion-dollar expansion program, the new terminal and the controversial second runway will be the flagship changes to the facility.
If the 2008 plan gets a green light, as well as the new runway and terminal the international terminal will have at least 25 gates to cater for Brisbane’s increasing role as an Australian gateway.
With an expected workforce of about 40,000 by 2023, the corporation plans to provide staff parking to the west of the international terminal in an area that will also be dedicated to offices and hotels.
A light rail loop will link the hotels and car park to both terminals.
Corporation spokesman Jim Carden said “We are required to look ahead and this is the vision we are working towards with nothing specific or locked down. First we need the master plan and then before anything can proceed we have to prepare major development plans and environmental impact studies.”
Brisbane has overtaken Melbourne as Australia’s second-busiest international air terminal for inbound tourists, with 1.09 million landing there annually according to the latest figures.
