Qantas monitoring planes after safety scare
An AAP report says that Qantas says it is monitoring its fleet of Bombardier Q400 planes after a safety scare overseas, with Danish civil aviation authorities grounding all Dash 8 Q400 planes, also known as Bombardiers, in the Scandinavian Airlines Systems fleet yesterday after one made an emergency landing at Copenhagen airport.
At the same time SAS has announced that it is disposing of the whole of its extensive Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 fleet immediately.
None of the 44 passengers and crew on board was injured during the incident.
Qantas Airways has seven Q400s in its QantasLink regional operation including the busy Sydney-Canberra route and last month, Qantas grounded its Bombardiers following an airworthiness directive from the Civil Aviation and Safety Authority (CASA) and Transport Canada after two emergencies in less than a week in Scandinavia.
Qantas was given the all-clear to return the entire fleet to the skies the following day.
Last week, Qantas announced it would buy another 12 Bombardier Q400 aircraft for its QantasLink operation and planned to take up an option to buy a further 24 at the same time that SAS is disposing of all its Dash aircraft, because of safety risks and damage to the airline’s reputation.
