Recession Travellers Choose Price Comparison Sites Over Brands

Economies the world over may be experiencing the worst downturn in years but this isn’t putting holidaymakers off booking a well-earned break if the latest findings by arguscarhire.com are anything to go by. Instead of foregoing a week in the sun, holidaymakers are looking for cheaper ways to book and this has meant a boost in demand for travel aggregator and price comparison sites such as arguscarhire.com.

Research carried out on behalf of the car hire distribution site found the gap between aggregator and brand name searches grew from 33% in January 2007 to 62% in January 2008. Customers were also found to be performing more searches before settling on a deal.

The data also reveals that the car hire market is still experiencing growth despite being squeezed by a decline in both flights and hotels.

“Tougher economic times are definitely affecting the way people are searching for holiday essentials such as car hire”, says Argus Car Hire’s Online Brand Manager Emma Coakley. “Holidaymakers have had to adapt their travel budgets this year and this has meant they are looking more to aggregator sites such as arguscarhire.com to help them find the cheapest deals.” “People also seem to be leaning towards shorter, independently booked breaks. We are seeing an increase in 10 day bookings where before 14 days were the norm.”

Arguscarhire.com searches across 450 car rental suppliers in over 17,000 locations worldwide to find customers the lowest price.

Current deals include Alicante £7 per day, Faro £8 per day, Gerona £7 per day and Cape Town £13 per day.*

Price is based on the 7-day rental of a mini/economy-sized vehicle for pick up by February 28th. Price includes: insurance, breakdown assistance, airport fee and unlimited mileage.
