Sales down but revenue up for Advantage

Advantage Travel Centres has seen an increase in revenue this year, despite a fall in sales.

During the economic slowdown, some families are cutting back on the number of holidays they are taking this year.

However, around 70 of Advantage’s 700 outlets have focussed on the luxury market and they are enjoying growth.

Advantage member Stephen Moore, from Kent-based Air Viceroy, said his sales revenue was up 14% on this time last year. But he admitted that some families were cutting back on their number of trips and he was having to work harder to close a sale.

Advantage chief executive John McEwan said: “Overall, we know the market is down five per cent because of the capacity taken out by the big players, but Advantage is doing well.

“Ten years ago, agents were generalists competing on price, but now we are identifying areas where they can grow.”

Sales during May were slow, but have improved in recent weeks, with online bookings coming in late.

Despite the worsening economic situation, McEwan said he was positive about the future.

“The underlying economics of travel are sound. It is a growth sector, people are living longer, and those people have time and money,” he said.
