A Saudi mother and daughter have drowned after getting into difficulty in waters off a Lombok beach.

They were identified as Jamilah Abdul Malik, 45, and her daughter Elham Abdulsalam, 26.

Their bodies were recovered from the water at Ketapak Beach in Selong Belanak on the south coast of the Indonesian holiday island.

According to a Lombok Search and Rescue Agency spokesperson Jamilah was swept away while swimming and her daughter went to help but also was swept out to sea.

A search was carried out by local villagers and their bodies were recovered a few hours later.

"The mother was suddenly caught in a current and swept out to sea. The daughter dived in to rescue her but both drowned before others arrived to help," said Fawaz Abdullah Althaymin, an official at the Saudi Arabian embassy in Jakarta.

There are no life guards on any of the beaches in this sparsely populated area of the South Lombok coastline which is a short drive west of the beach town of Kuta.
