Second best ever year for Canada tourism in 2016

Canada had its second best ever year for tourism in 2016.

It welcomed nearly 20 million visitors which was the best since 2002.

The figures were driven by the highest ever number of US travelers by air, up 17% compared to 2015.

"Congratulations to the Canadian tourism industry on an incredible 2016 – so excited to work together to ensure this growth continues. As we celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday this year, let’s also celebrate our tourism operators and industry leaders, and recognize their role in supporting economic growth for middle class Canadians," said Bardish Chagger, minister of small business and tourism.

New records were set in several growing Destination Canada markets, including South Korea, China, Australia and India, which all showed double digit growth.

"Together with our industry partners, we are encouraging travelers to explore Canada and experience a life less ordinary. I couldn’t think of a better time to visit than right now," Destination Canada’s CEO David F. Goldstein.
