Security scare at Heathrow as man with rucksack runs in front of aircraft

Friday, 14 Mar, 2008 0

A man with a rucksack who ran into the path of an aircraft has caused a major security alert at London Heathrow.

Nobody was hurt in the incident, which happened yesterday (Thursday), 24 hours before the Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh are due to officially open the airport’s Terminal 5.

According to BBC reports, the man scaled the perimeter fence and ran into the North runway.

He was surrounded by armed police before being taken into custody.

Up to 20 emergency services vehicles were sent to the scene and sniffer dogs were brought in to check the rucksack.

The North runway was closed for a few hours but was re-opened.

A BAA spokesman said: “Clearly this incident is a matter of some concern, and will be fully investigated in conjunction with the police.”
