Spending up for Labor Day holiday travel
Labor Day weekend will be a $13.5 billion windfall for tourism businesses and transportation operators.
That is the figure an estimated 35.5 million Americans will spend during the holiday, according to the U.S. Travel Association.
It predicts each traveller will spend an average of $380 on goods and services, up 2% from 2014.
Trip spending by air travelers is projected to be significantly higher at $1,090 on average based on the AAA’s estimate of 2.6 million air travelers over the holiday weekend.
US Travel’s survey says 7% will likely stay fewer days and 9.1% will travel shorter distances because of perceived congestion on highways and overcrowded airports.
"We’ve seen time and again that travel dollars are among the most economically stimulating, job-creating dollars there are. The lack of a long-term strategy for our highways and air travel system has created the perception for many that they’re better off staying home," said Roger Dow, U.S. Travel Association CEO.
"Our infrastructure problems go way beyond mere inconvenience—they’re causing economic harm, and we need a long-term vision for tackling them."
The survey believes transport hassles are keeping more than four million potential travelers at home which is costing about $1.4 billion in potential spending.
