Spirit Airlines ditching Cuba flights

Thursday, 17 Apr, 2017 0

Another US airline is quitting the Cuba market.

Low cost carrier Spirt Airlines will end flights between Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport and Havana on May 31.

It decision comes just months after launching the twice daily service due to high costs and weak demand, the carrier said.

"We really wanted it to work, especially being South Florida’s hometown airline, and the ultra-low cost leader to the Caribbean, but the costs of serving Havana continue to outweigh the demand for service," said Bob Fornaro, Spirit CEO.

Customers booked after May 31 will receive a full refund and from May 3-24, Spirit is downsizing the service to once a day, but will resume double daily service for the final week.
