State Department lifts worldwide ‘Do Not Travel’ advisory

The US State Department has decided to lift the Level 4 global health and travel advisory which covered all overseas travel.

In March it issued a blanket worldwide ‘do not travel’ advisory but will now go back to country or region-specific warnings.

"With health and safety conditions improving in some countries and potentially deteriorating in others, the Department is returning to our previous system of country-specific levels," the State Department said.

"We are closely monitoring health and safety conditions across the globe, working in partnership with the CDC and other agencies.  As always, we will regularly update our destination-specific advice to US travelers as conditions evolve."

While the advisory has been relaxed for many countries the US still has the highest Level 4 advisory for dozens of countries.

Greater China destinations Taiwan and Macau have been eased to the lowest Level 1: ‘Exercise Normal Precautions’ yet Mainland China remains at Level 4.

Countries including New Zealand, Thailand and parts of the South Pacific are now at Level 2:  ‘Exercise Increased Caution.’

People planning overseas travel are advised to enrol in the Smart Traveler Program which sends updated alerts about health and safety conditions in global destinations.
