Sun, sea, sand, chips – and English-speaking locals
Despite a growing passion for adventure travel, most British holidaymakers are still seduced by the prospect of “sun, sea, sand and eating chips in a place where the locals speak English”. That is the conclusion of a survey carried out by the online travel provider Expedia, which found that the majority of travellers from the UK stick to what they know rather than trying different destinations, holiday activities, or “foreign” food. Among the figures that came out of the survey, are the following:
- 74% expect locals to speak English when they go abroad
- 58% choose a “standard hotel” for their accommodation
- 43% are “itching” to return to work after two weeks away
- 7% would go on a great train journey such as the Orient Express
- 5% would stay in a castle or chateau
- 2% would sleep “under the stars”
Dermot Halpin, managing director of Expedia, said: “Given the increasing range of options open to British travellers, it seems that when it comes to our ideal trip we are very traditional. Essentially we still prefer the modern-day equivalent of the Victorians’ week by the sea in Brighton – only the destinations have changed.”
