Thai Airways to spread its wings
Thai Airways president Piyasvasti Amranand has been explaining why the airline had no choice but to join the rush to operate a low-cost subsidiary.
He said the rapid growth at the lower end of the air travel market meant that THAI could not stand by and watch this business go elsewhere.
Last week Singapore Airlines announced that it planned to launch a low-cost carrier later this year.
“Low-cost airlines have taken our share because we don’t have our own low-cost carrier. That’s why we’re moving into the market,†said the THAI president.
THAI plans to equip its recently unveiled low-cost carrier Thai Wings with 11 narrow-bodied aircraft flying regional routes.
The launch of Thai Wings appears to place a question mark over the future of the proposed Thai-Tiger Airways joint venture.
