Thailand bars can stay open later to boost tourist spending

Thailand is taking a couple of measures to further boost inbound tourism numbers.

It has granted extended hours at bars, clubs and other entertainment venues in select tourist areas.

These include Phuket, Bangkok, Pattaya, Chiang Mai, and the Koh Samui.

It allows venues to stay open an additional two hours until 4:00 am.

It comes into effect on December 15, in time for the festive holiday season.

It comes on the back of other Thailand tourism measures to lure more travellers such as offering visa-free travel to major source markets like China.

Also, the Thailand Finance Ministry is considering revamping its beverage taxation policy to increase consumption.

It could include lowering beverage tax and also abolishing duty free shops at airport arrival areas to encourage more spending at local venues.
