Thailand could revive tourist tax
Thailand’s plan for a THB300 tourist tax, which had been put on the back burner, is back in play.
The idea is being floated again by new Tourism Minister Sorawong Thienthong.
“This fee is crucial for the growth of our tourism sector. It will fund better infrastructure, enhance attractions, and ensure the safety of tourists,” the tourism minister says.
The tourist tax was first approved in 2022, but had been pushed back many times and all be shelved.
Sorawong says it could be rolled out before the end of this year.
He will continue the “Ignite Tourism Thailand” initiative to develop entertainment zones iprove air hubs and further promote second-tier cities.
“We’re determined to support new attractions and boost secondary cities. We’ll offer incentives like tax breaks to attract private investment”
The minister is set to meet today with various tourism operators as well as the Association of Thai Travel Agents and the Tourism Council of Thailand, to discuss new national tourism strategies.
