The Mississippi River Trail recently received a grant from Tourism Cares
The 3,000-mile Mississippi River Trail connects public trails in 10 states and 400 smaller towns from Minnesota to Louisiana for multi-use recreation and transportation. Because of the trail, river towns have redeveloped their waterfronts with public spaces that residents and visitors from throughout the world can enjoy. Connected to riverboats, railroads, airports and other transportation options, the trail forms the backbone of this network of communities, linking the river to the rest of the nation.
In 2007, the Mississippi River Trail partnered with ParkPalooza National Park Service (NPS) Centennial Project to enhance educational programming and increase visitation to 17 national parks. The Tourism Cares grant is helping the Mississippi River Trail develop a signature traveling interpretive exhibit. Its depiction of the river’s impact on social, cultural, historical, and economic diversity will give visitors a greater understanding of the importance of America’s national treasure, the Mississippi River.
