Thousands protest overtourism in Palma

A crowd estimated at more than 20,000-strong took to the streets of Palma to protest again against mass tourism.
The demonstrators waved flags and banners such as one reading: ‘Your luxury, our misery.’
The demo was organized by about 80 organisations and community groups, which claimed there were 50,000 present.
There are calling for a new tourism model with tourist limits in parts of Mallorca that have become saturated.
The current tourism policy has left public services at breaking point with natural resources irrevocably harmed.
Like in Barcelona, there is local anger at a lack of affordable housing due to foreign ownership and short term rentals.
Organisers claimed that 50,000 attended the protest; police estimates put the numbers closer to 20,000 participants.
Last year, a record 17.8 million visited the Balearic Islands.
