Three more airlines bring in smart luggage restrictions

Sunday, 05 Jan, 2018 0

Another three US airlines – United Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines and Allegiant Airlines – have confirmed restrictions will apply to smart luggage with fixed non-removable lithium batteries.

The restrictions will come into effect in line with other airlines on January 15.

Some smart bag models allow the batteries to be detached which must be placed in the cabin and not in the cargo hold.

However there are others which cannot be removed and are not permitted on flights for many carriers either in the cabin or the cargo hold.

Batteries on smart bags power functions such as USB charging ports, self-weighing tech and even onboard motors enabling the bags to be ridden.

Last month Southwest Airlines, Delta Air Lines, American and Alaska Airlines announced similar restrictions.

Qantas, Air Canada and British Airways have also followed with their own restrictions.
