Timely accolade for South African Airways
South African Airways has been named the most on-time airline in the world following the release of the June 2013 Airline and Airport On-time Performance Report by FlightStats, the global flight and airport information service.
The report covers airlines and airports in North America, Europe and Asia.
According to Tim Clyde-Smith, SAA’s country manager for Australasia, the FlightStats report indicated major international airlines on average delivered 75.85% of their flights to the arrival gate within 15 minutes of schedule in June, down from May’s 80.70%.
Cancellations were 1.39%, up from 1.09% in May.
"Only six major international carriers delivered over 90% of their flights on time, with SAA topping the list with 93.33%, outperforming several reputable airlines from around the world," Clyde-Smith said.
"Over the last five months SAA achieved over 90% or above on-time performance, beating the list of the most on-time airlines in the world on three occasions."
SAA has daily non-stop flights between Sydney and Perth to Johannesburg, with direct connections to the largest network in Africa including 26 destinations on the continent.
The top ten performing major international airlines and their on-time percentages in June were:
1 South African 93.3%
2 Gulf Air 92.0%
3 ANA 91.4%
4 Japan Airlines 91.2%
5 Finnair 90.3%
6 Tyrolean Airways 90.2%
7 KLM 89.7%
8 Easy Jet 87.2%
9 Korean Air Lines 86.8%
10 Iberia 85.7%
Tokyo’s Haneda maintained top spot among the world’s busiest airports with an on-time performance of 95%.
