Tourism Changes To Boost Jobs

The Northern Territory Government unveiled changes to the Northern Territory Tourist Commission (NTTC), which are designed to focus on new partnerships and jobs growth in one of the Territory’s fastest growing sectors.

Northern Territory Chief Minister and Tourism Minister, Clare Martin, said the NTTC will now be known as ‘Tourism Northern Territory’, integrated under the Department of Business Economic and Regional Development.

The new arrangements, including a new Tourism Advisory Board providing advice directly to the Minister for Tourism, were outlined in a bill of amendments introduced to the Northern Territory Parliament today.

“These changes provide a clear direction for Government and the sector to find new opportunities for tourism ventures and our assistance in promoting them,” Ms Martin said

“I am confident that this can only lead to more jobs for Territorians.

“Tourism is critically important to our economy and we have to keep looking for the best ways to lead in a hugely competitive market.

“Regional development is the number one priority achieved through developing new partnerships. This stronger focus is a clear message from the recent economic development summit.

“Indigenous tourism will also benefit, because here is a rare opportunity for the Territory to lead the way in developing a strong and vibrant indigenous tourism product.

“The primary charter of Tourism NT remains the same – to market and develop the Northern Territory as one of Australia’s leading tourist destinations.” said Ms Martin.

The legislative amendments are expected to come into effect early in 2006.
