TUI TRAVEL SEEKS ENVIRONMENT MANAGER FOR THOMSON AIRWAYS
Ramping up its sustainable capacity at TUI, their Environment Manager, James Whittingham said tonight: ""TUI UK’s airline, Thomson Airways is committed to being an environmentally responsible airline. Reporting to the Customer Service Director support the continued rollout of TUI UK & Ireland’s Environment & People programme, by implementing, maintaining and improving the Environment Management System (EMS). Provide technical support to and drive progress with colleagues across the Airline on topics as diverse as minimising the production of in-flight and engineering waste, supporting the progress towards commitments outlined in Sustainable Aviation, utility management, climate change policy & airline operations, working in partnership with the existing Fuel Manager. Develop and maintain a productive working relationship with key environmental contacts (e.g. Boeing & General Electric).
What you’ll be doing
• Drive and maintain the roll-out of an EMS in line with ISO 14001; support the programme of internal environmental audits (at Engineering Line Stations and Head Offices in the UK), adapting/creating procedures to minimise environmental impacts as required within the aviation part of the business, e.g. operational control procedures for the airline to minimise environmental impacts at our Engineering Line Stations.
• Organise and be the driving force behind the UK Airline Environmental Work streams to help develop, set and then monitor progress, against objectives and annual targets.
• Influence key UK Airline contacts to gather and consolidate environmental performance data – producing key environmental performance indicators (KPIs), analysing the data for trends and linking into the EMP and reporting on it in a timely and appropriate format to the Group Environmental Manager.
• Liaise with the TUI UK SD Communications Executive and the Thomson Airways’ Communications Manager to produce written content for internal/external publications, e.g. the Environment & People website, Crew Update Magazine, Pilot Newsletters. Design and deliver training and awareness workshops for Airline groups.
• Support the Aviation Industry Affairs Team by researching & collating up to date industry developments and data. Where appropriate attend BATA & Sustainable Aviation meetings. Work with all relevant external agencies to further research and understanding of aviation’s impacts upon the environment, i.e. The OMEGA Programme of work.
• Support the Head of the Boeing 787 Project Team and act as an advisor on environmental matters
• Understand and implement the learnings from other TUI Airlines & beyond to ensure Thomson Airways stays ahead of the game as a proponent of a sustainable aviation.
• Working in partnership with Thomson Airways’ Fuel Manager & TUI Travel PLC’s Group Environment Manager to progress and implement environmental initiatives
What we’re looking for
• Professional/vocational qualification in environmental management essential
• Experience of practical environmental management in a professional work environment, ideally an airline – i.e. EMS, auditing, rolling out best practice programmes of environmental work
• An appreciation of sustainable development, corporate social responsibility and current environmental management issues across a broad range of topics (e.g. sustainable air transport, energy, waste & green office management) within an airline context
• Good communication and interpersonal skills – ability to communicate with internal colleagues and external businesses and agencies
• IT literate including MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint
• Strong analytical skills, with specific exposure to monitoring and measuring environmental data
• Additional skills required:-
• Report writing and presentation skills
• Proven negotiation skills
• Change and project management experience
• Educated to post graduate level.
